Best Beauty Buys - Summer to Fall


Yes, yes, I know Bustle just wrote about "Summer's End", but if you're not in school, trust - summer is not over for you. Especially if you live in Texas. Here, summer extends well through September and even into October. But even if you are in a more temperate clime, worry not. These beauty buys are good recommendations all year long!

I could write an entire post about sunscreens, y'all. Hell, I could probably write an, albeit very boring, book. I have tried almost every sunscreen out there. In fact, I urge you to challenge me in the comments. Most sunscreens fit into one of 3 categories - waxy, oily or powdery. The best one I have found... the only one, in fact, that I find to be sincerely effective AND pleasant, is Shiseido's Urban Environment SPF 40 Protection Cream. I mix it with my foundation for everyday wear, and it protects even my pale, freckly self, without making me look like an off-duty mime. The slight, white cast fades into invisibility after application (no really, it does) and it leaves your skin moisturized, but not greasy. I recommend the cream formulation over the lotion (all light-weight liquid formulation suncreens depend on SD Alcohol 40, which is very drying). See? I told you I know too much about sunscreen. Let my toil be your reward.

Hi there. How are you? Do you suffer from frizz? Given all the products out there, I'm going to say the answer is probably yes. I suffer from major frizz, but this cream (applied on damp hair) really does transform my frizzy, poofy curls into smoother, calm locks worthy of a guest spot on Outlander. A little bit goes a long way. It will take down the volume a notch, so if you have volume to spare, this is the cure.

I got this as a freebie at a conference, and figured I'd give it a try. To be honest, I thought it was just going to be one more fancy product destined for the trash, especially since I seem to have a reaction to products that claim high potency vitamin C. But, no! It did not irritate, it smells gorgeous, and dare I say? I think it did make my skin look brighter.

It gives you a nice hint of color and shine, and is not sticky. IT IS NOT STICKY. I feel like that's all I should have to say. Everyone who's ever had long hair on a windy day and ended up sporting a bizarre lipgloss-mustache knows what I'm talking about. That won't happen to you with these.

Best Invisible Powder - Makeup Forever HD Microfinish Powder

I shied away from this at first, because it's a loose powder, and I prefer a compact I can carry around. However, Makeup Forever's Micro-Finish powder is the lightest weight powder I have ever used, has virtually no color, and I rarely need to re-apply. It also seems to really stick everything in place. I definitely recommend it, especially on those humid days and nights, when the last thing you want is for your makeup to look all caked-up. I can't recommend the compact, because it disappears on you quickly and is very expensive, but the loose powder will last a long time.

Best "Nude" Lipstick that ACTUALLY looks good on all skin tones - Revlon's Goldpearl Plum

Oh, the elusive nude lip. You look good on.... so few of us. Almost no one. Not to mention "nude" is different for everyone, as we all come in a variety of shades and hues, something cosmetic companies like to ignore. I look like a corpse anytime I attempt a truly nude lip (see also Bustle's humorous attempt at the nude lip/smokey eye combo). So may I suggest an alternative? This goldy/bronzish light pink is a great color, is still neutral, and WAY more likely to look good on a variety of skin tones. Dark or pale, warm or cool, if the nude lip has failed you too, I recommend this lipstick instead.
